Wilmington Relocation - Events, Attractions and Lifestyle in the Cape Fear Region
Wilmington, North Carolina is situated right in the middle of the scenic and temperate southeastern North Carolina coastal region. Once upon a time the coastal islands and beach communities were quite unspoiled and unpopulated, but over the last couple of decades, growth of new homes and commercial construction has skyrocketed. Beach communities like Carolina, Wrightsville and Kure are now much more densely populated and commercial.
Kure Beach is perhaps the last vestige of “old-world” beachfront. This small, historically Bohemian community is built around a few small and friendly neighborhood bars and seafood restaurants. Lack of spit and polish is no indication of taste, either. A few Kure beach eateries have some of the best seafood specials around.
Fort Fisher
Fort Fisher, at the end of Kure Beach, is a well preserved Confederate fort with bunkers that partially obscure the view of the Intracoastal Waterway. History buffs will enjoy the paved walkway around the fort and the informational signage along the pathway.
Wilmington Schools and Universities
Wilmington is home to excellent schools, both public and private. Reputable colleges and universities in the area include University of North Carolina-Wilmington, or UNC-W, and Cape Fear Community College.
Outdoor Activities
Golf enthusiasts, boaters, fishermen, surfers and outdoorsmen are attracted to the length of temperate seasons. Even the wintertime can be warm enough to golf or for other outdoor activities. There are quite a number of gated golf communities for those looking to relocate for the sport and resort-style amenities. Most of the best communities also feature tennis and swimming facilities.
Shopping
Independence Mall is located on Oleander Drive and is one of Wilmington’s most popular retail malls. There are many specialty shops in the Wilmington area, as well, a number of them in historic downtown.
Historic Downtown Wilmington is a must for visitors and residents. The River Walk area is tastefully maintained with upscale boutiques and shops and a handful of riverfront cafes and restaurants. You can eat and drink right on the boardwalk when the weather is accommodating.
Events and Attractions
A few major events take place annually in Wilmington including the Azalea Festival, Cape Fear Blues Fest, and downtown Riverfest. Some other regular events visitors and residents can find occur almost weekly. There are festivals for music, crafts and seafood; a handful of fishing tournaments, classic car shows, impromptu surfing contests and plenty of other local community events.
